short-haired cat’s shedding?

I have had many cats over my life-time, both long and short haired breeds (though I should say mutts, they were all strays or from the “pound”). My problem is that I now have short haired cats that shed constantly at insane rates! I have three cats in all, one is a short hair that barely sheds, but the brother and sister (not of the same line) shed as if they are going bald, they aren’t, the hair just keeps growing. Does anyone have any tips on what I can do? I can’t afford to take them to a groomer on a regular basis until I am out of school, so that option is out for now. I try to brush them, but they tend to hate it even though I am gentle. I’m going crazy though! I leave the house everyday covered in hair, as are my floors, even though I sweep and swiffer every other day! Some one save me from the attack by cat hair!!!!

What are you feeding them? I’m betting it’s a cheap dry food that you bought at WalMart or the grocery store. Foods like this contain little to no real meat and are made mostly of corn. And when you feed a cat a crappy diet like that, shedding can be excessive.

Switch them to a healthier diet of food that’s made with real meat and grain free. Blue Buffalo Wilderness is one you can easily find at your local PetSmart. And give them canned food daily as well. Another thing you can add to their diet to improve the quality of their coats is salmon oil. You can find it at better pet stores.

Get a better more GENTLE brush for them as well. I’m betting you’re using one with wire pins and it’s hurting them. Better yet – use a good quality steel-toothed comb. This will work MUCH better at getting out the loose hairs of the undercoat than any brush.

You also might want to realize that it’s SPRINGTIME – and shedding the thicker winter coat is completely normal.
